In this last blog post I am going to talk about the process of this class and how it helped me learn and grow. I had professor Mangini for English 100 also and my first thought when I found out we would have to post publicly online I was like no I don’t want to do that because I like keeping things private but I decided to try it out. After writing a few blogs I really enjoyed it. I liked the way the class was set up and what we wrote so I decided to take him again for Comp. II. In class the process is more keep improving your writing not just typing a draft handing it in and getting a grade he actually wants you to improve your writing and do as many drafts as you want. Also the things we would read and talk about all lead back to the same thing. They are more interesting and real life topics rather than the general research or writing. You had a lot of space to do something you wanted to write about. I loved this class because it made me want to improve my writing and made me enjoy going to class and doing my blogs. I think for me in my perspective I have improved my writing skills a lot since taking his class and probably have learned more in these two classes then all of high school. I would recommend if you need to take english 100 or 112 take this one.

12) Formal Assignment #2. A Reflection. [Categories: Reflection]: Please complete the following:
In this blog post I am going to talk about my process in writing my research paper, Should the U.S. Follow Finland Education System. For this paper I worked alone. This was a good approach because I could sit down and concentrate. The rhetorical mode I used for my paper is argumentative and the genre is argumentative research paper. I wrote this paper in a few days. Well I did the into in school and then after school I went home organized all my research material and highlighted the information I was going to use. I then sat there for five hours and worked on it and got a pretty good amount done. A few days after that I did the same thing and then finished it in school when I had my break. This was a good approach for me. I wrote this paper at home on my kitchen table and in the library at school. My second draft I wrote in class and also in the library at school. This was also a good approach for me. I chose this topic because when I was watching the movie Where to Invade Next and they were talking about this I found myself saying and kinda yelling at myself oh yeah I so agree, why doesn’t my school do this. Or this is unfair we need this in U.S schools. I think it was a good choice. It felt good to write this argument because I felt strongly about it and I found a lot of information that was useful. 11) Formal Assignment #1. A Reflection [Categories: Reflection]: Please complete the following:
In this blog my process of writing my first formal assignment and whether my approaches were good choice or bad. For my first formal assignment I choose the genre of a Fan-Fiction narrative. It is fiction written by a fan of, and featuring characters from, a particular TV series, movie, book, etc. In class we read a story called A Good Man is Hard to Find by Flannery O'Connor. I used this story to make a Fan Fiction Narrative out of it. In my writing a use a type of writing called Reflective Writing. Here is draft #1 of my fan fiction called Who Really is the Misfit? To compose my fanfiction narrative I worked alone. I think this was a good approach because if I have anyone else around me or even the TV on I get distracted. Although I did hand my drafts in for revision so I guess I didn't work completely alone. The rhetorical mode I am using for this writing is narration. The genre is fanfiction. I wrote this draft over a course of a week. On tuesdays and thursdays I have a two and a half hour break between classes so I would work on it then in the school library so I had no distractions and I had to actually sit there and do it. I think this was a good approach. I wrote this paper in the library and at home. In the library I believe was a good choice because it really made me sit down and focus on it. At home is where I had to finish it. I don’t think this was a good approach because there are so many things yo get distracted by at home. I chose to write about this chosen topic because one I love fanfiction. I love how you can make it into anything you want. I always find myself making up stories in my head and I actually got to write one down for my class for once. I have only probably read two whole actual books, besides kid books in my lifetime. One was a fanfiction that actually became published. It also makes it easier to imagine what these characters in the book are really like or look like because they are usually based off of real people. I chose to write a fanfiction about A Good Man is Hard to Find, but mostly the Misfit because I read it and I was like I can actually maybe make this into something. Instead of them killing the family I could make the house actually there and trap them into it and have the Misfit have this whole backstory was my first thought. This Misfit also reminded me of a character on the CW show riverdale which is based on the Archie Comic books. The show and the story are both kinda dark so I made this into a fanfiction of the mixture of the two. I actually had a lot of fun writing it and figuring out how I was going to tell this story. During writing this story I had so many ideas I had to write them all down. Now I still have ideas how I can change it or add some stuff for major plot twists. I love the complexity of characters and how they all have a past and a story to tell. This blog is a reflection on my midterm conference.
Some questions we explored during the conference was do I think my hiraeth is a narrative. I answered yes because it's about a true story that happened to me in my life. Also something that was asked is do I think my Slumdog Millionaire argument essay was more of an argument or a summary. I said it was more of a summery because it was more telling what happened in the movie rather that answering the question “was it Salim's choices or society who made him who he was as an adult.” Some main takeaways from our discussion was how to make my hiraeth better and how I could expand it to get to the 1500 words. Also how I could improve my argumentative essay. Some plans for revision is for my hiraeth i'm going to add some more dialogue of my grandmother and maybe go to the house now after selling it and see how it's different. Also we just had another thursday night dinner at my cousins last week without her there but we were eating on her dining room table. Maybe i'll compare what is different now. Also for my Slumdog Millionaire essay I’m going to get rid of the word “would”. In my english 100 class we watched a Netflix original series called Chef's Table.
This episode went through the life of a chef, Francis Mallmann.
I worked by myself composing this project. This wasn’t really a good approach I guess but I don’t have that many options since I have like one friend and it’s just me and my mom at home. I think the most difficult part of my writing process was making time to write this assignment because i've been working a lot more lately and i’m so tired I go home and go right to sleep even if i’m typing I usually fall asleep typing. I just started working in september and I never really had homework at all until this semester. I didn’t exactly overcome this obstacle. I wrote this project on the weekend and no this was not a good approach because I should have done it a lot earlier. I wrote this on my couch and I guess it was a good approach since I have no where else to sit in my house. I choose to write about my chosen topic because I wanted to express that it's not always people's choices who determine who they become but it can be society and other people around them. When you are little and are raised that way or live in certain conditions it's not the child's fault. I will adapt my writing process by maybe taking a half day at work or taking off a day when something is due that week because I have no other time even though I only work Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.
I worked by myself while composing my academic mindset draft. This wasn’t really a good approach but it was the only approach I could do. It’s always good to get another opinion on your work but there was no one there that I wanted to read it. I think the most difficult part of my writing process was really trying to figure out what mindset I had and picking out the quotes from the articles. What I did to overcome these obstacles was I had to take my time, think really hard, and keep re-reading the articles to find the best quotes I could use.
When I wrote this was first one day at school on my one hour break and I spent the whole hour writing and going over the articles. My goal was to get at least three hundred words done and I got a little over that. Then I finished it on Thursday after school. This wouldn’t be considered the best approach but I was sick a lot of the week so that was the best I could do. I wrote part of this project in the school library even though it wasn't quiet when it should have been and the other part at my house on my couch. I think the library was a good approach because that's usually a good place to do school work but my couch when my mom's home at night really isn’t. This is because she’ll have the television louder than necessary so I have to tell her to turn it down and to be quiet and put my headphones in with no music on so I can kind of zone everything out. Why I chose to write about my topic because this was the topic we were assigned. How I will adapt/revise my writing process for future revision of the academic mindset assignment is if I hopefully have off work once and awhile I will start working on the draft sooner than usually and I will try to clean my room so I can work on my papers in there because I haven’t been able to even walk in there or sit on my bed for months. The presenter of the video we watched on reflective writing mentions that a reflection should not stop at simple descriptions of the 5Ws. Rather, a reflection should provide the 5Ws and focus on your feelings and your "thoughts about the event--during it, after it, and since." I worked by myself while writing this hiraeth. I don’t think this was the best approach because I think you could always use an opinion on your writing. This was my only choice though because my mom was at work and my dad was at his house and I don’t really have other options.
I think the most difficult part of my writing process was picking the scenes and understanding what exactly the prompt was. I knew basically what to do but I wanted to make sure. It was hard to pick a specific scene because there were so many to choose from. What I did to overcome them was I kept reading the prompt over and over again and to pick the scenes I had to think really hard. When I worked on my hiraeth was one whole day. I picked the only day I didn’t have school or work and took all day to work on it. This was the best approach I could do because I had school Tuesdays and Thursdays and I worked usually mostly every other day all day. Then I go home and go to bed so I had only that one day. Where I wrote this project was on my couch with my moms laptop, but my television was off. I choose to write my hiraeth about my granmom and her house because that was the first thing and only thing I could think of when I heard what hiraeth meant. It is the only home that I know of that I can’t go back to. How will I revise my writing process for future revision of the hiraeth assignment is when my mom is home and i’m on the couch writing I will put headphones in to zone the television out because she's watching it. |
