In the article How Can You Create Fiction When Reality Comes to Call? by Carolyn Chute she talks about a typical day in her life in a very different way. She talks about her dogs, husband, and guests that just keep showing up at her house one after the other. Chute talks about how her type wring keeps screaming to her “I want you” but she keeps facing all of these distractions. The clock keeps going coo coo hour after hour and she just wants to go and write. In the next article I read called 6 Ways To Be A Hemingway-Level Productive Badass by Drake Baer where he discusses Ernest Hemingway who was a writer in the early and mid 1900’s and the six steps he used to write. A couple of the steps he used was he stood while he worked and another was he got up at the crack of dawn to write.
I face many distractions as a college student when I try to write a paper. The first distraction that I face is the television because when I say I’m just going to watch one episode of a show I watch it and then I can't stop because it's addicting and like my shows are my life even though that sounds bad. Another distraction I face is work. When I work I work from 8:30-5:30 on the days I don't have school on some weeks. So when I get home i'm so tired that I will just pass out right away. Also If my mom is home we live on a one floor apartment and I can’t do anything in my room so I work in the living room where she will be sitting. The T.V. sometimes will be to loud or she will try and talk to me and that is distracting. I believe that I could eventually become a better writer. If I work at it, practice, and just keep writing I will improve. You can never stop improving your writing and I think by writing these blogs this semester it will help me going farther into my college career. The six steps that I could use to avoid distractions and become a better writer is I will turn the television off. Second I will try and go home after work and work on my writing for at least an hour or two or as long as I can. The third step is i’m going to get all my stuff ready and on my couch. Forth I will turn my phone on silent. Fifth I will set times to work on my paper and stick to them. Lastly I could try and go into another room if my mom is home.

In Why I Write by Joan Didion she says “I stole the title for this talk, from George Orwell.” The article was actually published in 1976 by Orwell. Joan Didion discusses how and why she writes. She said “In many ways writing is the act of saying I, of imposing oneself upon other people, of saying listen to me, see it my way, change your mind”, which I thought was a good quote. She also talked about how she doesn’t know who I is until she wrote that certain sentence, and how the second week in writing the book she wrote lines that appear halfway through the book long before she knew why the character in the book was doing what she was doing.
There are a couple of reasons for why I write. Most of the time why I write is because I have to for a class, mostly english. I never liked writing much but when I find a topic I like it’s some what tolerable and sometimes I enjoy it. But if I don’t I have trouble being able to sit down and concentrate. Another reason I write is sometimes I will write down my feelings if I get angry or something because of my issues and hit helps so I don’t start yelling or start having a breakdown. Also I obviously text and tweet, and use other social media, sometimes when I text it's like I write a novel. |
