I worked by myself composing this project. This wasn’t really a good approach I guess but I don’t have that many options since I have like one friend and it’s just me and my mom at home. I think the most difficult part of my writing process was making time to write this assignment because i've been working a lot more lately and i’m so tired I go home and go right to sleep even if i’m typing I usually fall asleep typing. I just started working in september and I never really had homework at all until this semester. I didn’t exactly overcome this obstacle. I wrote this project on the weekend and no this was not a good approach because I should have done it a lot earlier. I wrote this on my couch and I guess it was a good approach since I have no where else to sit in my house. I choose to write about my chosen topic because I wanted to express that it's not always people's choices who determine who they become but it can be society and other people around them. When you are little and are raised that way or live in certain conditions it's not the child's fault. I will adapt my writing process by maybe taking a half day at work or taking off a day when something is due that week because I have no other time even though I only work Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.

This is my filmed based argument on the movie "Slumdog Millionaire" for my english 100 class.
Sami Vedisco English 100 12:10 Assignment # 3 Filmed-based Argument Due: 3-23-17 Was It Society or Salim’s Choices In Slumdog Millionaire, screenwriter Simon Beaufoy shares the story of Jamal and his brother Salim, who grew up in the slum neighborhoods of India. Jamal managed to gain a spot on the game show, Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? Throughout the film, Jamal is shown as a person who must overcome many obstacles to survive, including an experience of torture when he provides the correct answers to too many game show questions. Watching this movie it makes you think about did society or Salim’s choices make him who he was. I believe that it was society who made Salim do the things he did and made him who he was as an adult. Most of the things that happened in Salim and Jamal’s life weren’t necessarily their fault. I think that society had the biggest influence on the person Salim became. Salim made some choices in his life that have shaped him and also some of his relationships with others, but the biggest influence was all the people around him and where he was raised. When Salim and Jamal were just little boys their mother got killed right in front of their eyes in a riot. They were able to escape but that event had a big affect on Salim. He was very young at this time and because he was older the Jamal he thought he had to be the man of the family now to survive in this world they lived in. Right after his mother’s death he sold Jamal’s autograph from a Bollywood star without Jamal’s permission. What this says about him is he didn’t care if it wasn’t his to sell this is what society was like around him; they do anything to survive. With all of the poverty that everyone faced it wasn’t his fault he was just a little boy. When they escape from their town with Latika they are found by Maman, who is a gangster who tricks children into becoming beggars. Jamal and Salim are driven by van to a place under a highway where another group of kids who have no home are living. Salim takes a baby and takes it back to the men in the van. Jamal tries to stop him, but Salim insists that “babies pay double.” This was taught by the men and now that's how he thinks because of them. The same thing happened with Latika, when they find her being raised as a prostitute by Maman he kills Maman and they get away. Most people wouldn’t have the stomach to do that but because of being raised in that society he did. After that Salim also pulled a gun on Jamal to leave the room so him and Latika could be alone. Latika persuades Jamal to obey his brother so he wouldn’t get hurt. Years later Jamal is working in a call center and attempts to contact Salim. They meet up and Salim, asks for forgiveness, and offers him to stay in his fancy house. Jamal later gets his way into Javed's house to reunite with Latika but as he professes his love for her, but Latika asks him to forget about her. Then Jamal says he promises to wait for her every day at five o'clock at the VT station. She then attempts to meet him there, but is recaptured by Javed's men which is led by Salim. Salim has been basically with that group his whole life. That is how he was raised and that is what he knows to do and go along with. Jamal then becomes a contestant on the T.V. show called Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?, hoping that Latika is watched because she watches it all the time. At Javed's safehouse, Latika sees Jamal on the news. In an attempt to have forgiveness for his mistakes Salim gives Latika his cell phone and car keys, and asks her to forgive him and to go to Jamal. This shows that he’s still that little boy inside that lost his mother and loves his little brother even after everything. Salim then fills a bathtub with money and sits in it waiting for Javed and his men as they come to realize that he let Latika go. Jamal's final question is the name of the third musketeer in The Three Musketeers, which is ironic because he got hit with that book in class as a child and said that him, Salim, and Latika could be like The Three Musketeers. Jamal then uses his "Phone-A-Friend" lifeline to call Salim's phone, but Latika answers the phone. Relieved, Jamal randomly picks Aramis, the right answer, and wins the grand prize. Then Javed hears Latika on the show and realises that Salim has betrayed him. He and his men break down the bathroom door but Salim kills Javed before he is killed saying, "God is great". He had so much selflessness to help his brother be happy. All of this shows that society made Salim who he was not his choices. This is because a lot of his choices weren't actually his choices. Being raised in poverty, his mother dying, the violence around him wasn’t any of his fault. Prompt: Please watch the film Slumdog Millionaire and here are some topics you could possibly write an argument on.

Slumdog Millionaire was about two brothers Jamal and Salim Malik who were from the slums of Mumbai, India. Jamal goes on the indian version of a game show called “Who Wants To Be A Millionaire.” The movie flashes back and forth from Jamal’s childhood, his youth, when he is on the game show, and when he is arrested. The two brother’s watched their mother get killed write in front of them. They managed to escape with a girl named Latika. The three of them got sent to a camp which they thought the people there were good people. But one night they were going to cut Jamal’s eyes out with a spoon because blind singers make more money. Salim helped him escape and they ran away with Latika but the men got latika and they didn't see her for years until the found her being raised to be a prostitute. When they escape Salim kills Maman. Back at their room, Salim orders Jamal to leave him and Latika alone. When Jamal refuses, Salim draws a gun on him, and Latika persuades Jamal to listen to his brother and go away. Jamal doesn’t see them again until years later when Jamal uses the call center to try and find his brothers phone number. Jamal finds Salim and then Latika and he professes his love for her, Latika asks him to forget about her. But Jamal promises to wait for her every day at five o'clock at the VT station. Latika attempts to meet him there, but is recaptured by Javed's men, led by Salim. Knowing that Latika watches “Who Wants To Be A Millionaire” he joins the show. Jamal makes it all the way to the last question as then he is arrested because they think he is cheating which he is not. After the police torturing him they listen to Jamal's explanation of how he reached each answer. He only knew each answer because of something that happened to him in the past. So the police let him continue the game. At Javed's safehouse, Latika sees Jamal on the news and Salim, in an effort to make amends, gives Latika his phone and car keys, and asks her to forgive him and to go to Jamal. Salim then fills a bathtub with money and sits in it, awaiting for Javed and his men as they realise that he let Latika free. Jamal's final question is the name of the third musketeer in The Three Musketeers, which he never learned. Jamal said when they escaped after there mother was killed is he said that “We could be like the three musketeers.” But he never found out the names of them. Jamal uses his "Phone-A-Friend" lifeline to call Salim's phone. It is the only phone number he knows. Latika answers the phone, and, while she does not know the answer, tells Jamal that she is safe. Relieved, Jamal arbitrarily picks Aramis, the right answer, and wins the 20 million rupees. Javed hears Latika on the show and realises that Salim has betrayed him. He and his men break down the bathroom door but Salim kills Javed before he is shot, gasping, "God is great". Jamal and Latika meet on the platform at the railway station and they kiss.
