English 100 Assignment # 2 Academic Mindset Argument Due: 5/10/17 My Fixed Mindset academic mindset assignment In the University of Chicago study they say academic mindsets are beliefs, attitudes, or ways of perceiving oneself in relation to learning and intellectual work that support academic performance. There is a big debate between mindsets in education. A growth mindset is when someone can improve their academic performance by putting in the effort and not giving up when a task gets to hard. “A fixed mindset assumes that our character, intelligence, and creative ability are static givens which we can’t change, and success is the affirmation of that inherent intelligence; striving for success and avoiding failure at all costs become a way of maintaining the sense of being smart or skilled (Popova)”. They don’t put in the effort and when it gets hard they give up. In this argument I'm going to tell you how having a fixed mindset has impacted me and my learning and how learning to think like I have a growth mindset has helped me in my school career. First let’s say I have a fixed mindset most of the time or at least I did all through school. There are some occasions where you have to change your mindset to do well, for example a specific course. Sometimes you're just not that good at that subject and you usually just want to give up, but if you need to pass you have to switch your mindset up. I remember one time in senior year I had to take geometry. I was supposed to take this class like sophomore year but they just made me jump to algebra one a two first so I was always confused because they used geometry things in algebra sometimes. When I got into my geometry class most of the people were younger then me or already took this class and failed, so I was behind. For this I had to switch my mindset up and put more effort into the math and not give up when it got hard because it was either pass or not graduate. Having a growth mindset you are more likely to have a higher academic performance than someone with a fixed mindset. I believe that you can’t just be good at math you have to keep learning because there are so many equations and different ways to do things. Don’t get me wrong some people are geniuses at math but that's also because they do it all the time. In the article Teachers, Parents Often Misuse Growth Mindset Research, Carol Dweck Says by The Hechinger Report it says that Dweck, a Stanford University psychology professor theorizes that parents' well-intentioned praise contributes to the formation of unproductive fixed-mindset thoughts. “According to the theory, it's harmful to tell your kids that they're smart because when they eventually do struggle in school, they might think they're not so smart after all (The Hechinger Report)”. I’ve even caught myself saying things like this to kids such as “your so smart”. Since I have read this article I started thinking about what if one day they start to struggle and they think they can’t do it because they don’t know how and just think being smart comes natural. When I was younger I can remember people telling me I was smart or bragging to other people that I’m such a good student and getting all A’s and B’s. Which I did for most of the time, but because I was told that I was smart and hearing people brag about me just made me think. What if I did get a C or fail a test and I would think that they would be disappointed in me. I used to think that you were smart or you weren’t and that was my fixed mindset. In the article Teachers, Parents Often Misuse Growth Mindset Research, Carol Dweck Says Dweck's theory is so popular that I've had Brooklyn mommies at the playground reprimand me for incorrectly praising my daughter. “Many parents and teachers have interpreted Dweck's work to mean that they should praise a child's effort, such as "I'm proud that you tried really hard," or "I see how much effort you put into this." Or teachers sometimes give A's on assignments if a child has attempted all of the questions, regardless of whether the answers are good or not. "It's like the consolation prize. 'Oh, at least you worked hard,'" said Dweck. "What if they didn't make progress or they didn't learn? "Praising effort alone, she says, is useless when the child is getting everything wrong and not making progress (The Hechinger Report).” In the article I read called The perils of “Growth Mindset” education: Why we’re trying to fix our kids when we should be fixing the system by Alfie Kohn he talks about how basically we should be fixing the education system not our kids, which I agree with. Kohn said even some people who are educators would rather convince students they need to adopt a more positive attitude than address the quality of the curriculum (what the students are being taught) or the pedagogy (how they’re being taught it). Which I agree with because I've had many teachers who were more concerned with my attitude and what I was wearing then what they needed to teach me. “An awful lot of schooling still consists of making kids cram forgettable facts into short-term memory(Kohn).” Kohn also says that teacher-training sessions devoted to the wonders of adopting a growth mindset rarely bother to ask whether the curriculum is meaningful, whether the pedagogy is thoughtful, or whether the assessment of students’ learning is authentic (as opposed to defining success merely as higher scores on dreadful standardized tests). A Lot of educational environments either promote a growth or fixed mindset. In my educational experience I think they promoted a growth mindset, but that doesn’t mean they taught me in the right way. They would always teach me new things so I could learn. I had to adapt to the way they were teaching me and to the growth mindset they promoted. I think having the fixed academic mindset has prevented me from overcoming some academic challenges. I never was good at talking in front of people and I just wasn’t good at it. So my mind was saying I’m not good at it so I’m just going to give up so I would do absolutely anything from having to speak in front of a class. Also when I had to read chapters in books that I wasn't interested in I would start to read, loose tract, and then give up because I thought if I couldn’t now that I couldn’t ever. In highschool and even now sometimes the teachers wouldn’t really teach they would just expect to go over the material once on like a power point and say study and here's a test and not even give homework. I do bad on test in general but not having a good lesson plan didn’t help. Like this english class now I think has helped because we have actual discussions not just a lecture. In college though I want to switch from a growth mindset to a fixed mindset. I want to do this because I believe it will help me in the future and to put more effort into the work I do. Even if i’m not interested in the topic i’m going to do my best. I will keep trying until i’m proud of my work and I will listen and keep learning new things everyday. In conclusion I have a fixed mindset which is when a person only focuses on what they're good at. They don’t put in the effort and when it gets hard they give up and growth mindset which is when someone can improve their academic performance by putting in the effort and not giving up when a task gets to hard. I talked about how we should be fixing the school system and not our kids. Also the Carol Dweck's theory. It has been a disadvantage to have this mindset but I’m trying my hardest to adapt and do the best I can in my classes in order to succeed. Work Cited Farrington,, Camille A., and Melissa Roderick. English 100 Assignment #1 Due: 2-9-17 Thursday's at Granmoms I wake up and the snow is falling from the sky. It’s a thursday morning and school is cancelled so my mom and I make my way to my granmoms house, and yes that is how she spelled it so I’m not spelling it wrong. I walk up the sidewalk and there is a little patch shoveled out on the grass just for Molly. I’m walking up to the door and Molly is waiting for me barking jumping up scratching the glass door. The small but chubby white fluffy dog is jumping up on me when I walk through the door. My granmom is sitting there waiting for me on her side of the couch. The other side was for my grandfather that I called uncle Lou because he was my granmoms second husband. I can remember walking in when I was little and him sitting on the other end of that couch closest to the door and saying “get out of here” jokingly, but sadly he passed away when I was very young so it was just my grandmother in her house since I could really remember. She is watching her morning shows with yarn and a needle in her hand making all sorts of things such as blankets. Which she would start so many but never finish. My mom says goodbye and goes off to work. We then go and walk to the dining room where there are crafts and a sewing machine all over the table, different crafts every day. I sit on the tall stool at the kitchen island that is between the dining room and kitchen. I always sit on the side by the deck door which is on the side of the dining room and she sits across from me on the kitchen side. We always have the same thing for breakfast when I’m here, honey nut o’s, she has her Diet Pepsi and I have hot tea. After we're done she gives Molly the milk from her cereal and I said to her like always “This is why she is fat.” At 12:30 we sit down on the living room couch because it's time for her favorite show “Who Wants to Be A Millionaire.” She always made sure we were always home by 12:30 if we had to go to giant or the craft store. She knew about every question on the show and said “I could be on this show” every time we watched it. Me and her try to guess the answers and I only get them occasionally. After it’s over we walk down the stairs into the basement. The basement is huge with so many crafts to do. There are multiple sewing machines, tons of markers, crayons, fancy tape, a cricket which cuts out anything you want, and all different patterns and colors of paper. My granmom suggests that I make a scrapbook. We go get markers, glitter, stickers, tape, and tons of pictures of me when I was little. She helped me put the pictures on and the glitter. I still have the scrap book in my room till this day but it is not yet finished. By the time we want to stop it's almost three in the afternoon and the whole family is coming over for thursday night dinners in less than three hours and we still have to prepare dinner and dessert. While I’m upstairs on her Ipad for a little watching netflix of course I can smell the aroma of food going through the whole house. I go downstairs to the kitchen and see her cooking my favorite meal, chicken divan. It's chicken, broccoli, cream of chicken, mayo, and lots and lots of cheese. I help mix the cream of chicken and the mayo then sprinkle cheese all over and put it in the oven. I can remember always hearing the soap opera General Hospital in the background because it's usually on in the afternoon. She says “ do you want to make a dessert”. We decide to make peanut butter cookies which are my favorite out of her recipe book, or it might have been her mother's recipe before her. We make them from scratch by mixing the dry ingredients and wet ingredients together with a KitchenAid mixer. I always eat most of the batter out of the bowl of course even though you're not supposed to. I then set the table neatly with her glass plates with flowers on them, napkins, and then silverware on top. Now it’s 5:30 and people start showing up. First it’s usually my aunt and uncle, then my cousins and other family. By six everyone is here, but my mom is always the last one but usually is there by six. We all helped finish cooking and preparing the food and then put the food on the table. It’s a tight space between the kitchen and dining room so my cousin yells “WATCH HOT”. I am always the first to be sitting at the table so I could get the first plate. My granmom always sits at the top of the table because she is the heart of our family. The table is so loud from everyone talking and laughing about all the jokes their making and inside jokes we have. We all gossip about the latest things. After dinner my mom would always be the one to do the dishes. My granmom has a lot of things so sometimes she would find things she didn't want anymore so she would put them on the couch in the basement and call it a “yard sale.” She had so many cool little things and her shed was filled to the top with everything and decorations for each holiday. Her favorite were christmas and halloween. I once counted her christmas decorations and she had over five hundred of them. All my cousins and aunts are so excited and race each other down there so they can get what they want first. They always scoped out the basement before dinner. I go downstairs with them just to watch the entertainment because sometimes they fight over the things that want and me and my granmom are just laughing. We go back upstairs and get ready for dessert. Everyone gets some dessert and again sits and gossips. Now everyone slowing going home and’m usually the last one to leave. I leave around eight. I say good bye to my granmom and say I will see her tomorrow after school. Now a few years later it's around the time it snows again. She then passed away on December 9th 2015 right before christmas which was her holiday. We then sold her house about six months later. She lived in that house for over fifty years and created so many memories in that house with the people she loved the most. I never thought the last time I was in her house was going to be the last. I drive by it almost every day and it just isn't the same without all her creative window displays, Molly jumping on the front door, and the beautiful flowers she used to plant. My best friend lives next door and I just recently visited. I got out of the car and the grass was high with no flowers blooming, the lights are out, the door is closed and it is silent. I’m sure the new people there are making there own family memories but it's hard to think that someone else is in there in our families home that meant so much to us. I go on my friends deck and don’t see her green malibu car parked outback. We now have Thursday night dinners at my cousin's house and I walk up to the door and there Molly is barking and jumping up on the door but she's skinny and not as fluffy now. We still are making Thursday dinner memories but we know she's with us somehow. I’m so glad I got to spend almost eighteen years in that house with her and make so many great memories that I hope will never fade. She was my best friend and the best grandmother anyone could wish for. If you hear the words One Chicago or #chihards and don’t get excited that you're obviously not a fan of the Chicago franchise. The franchise is a series of four televisions shows airing on NBC. Between the four of them there are 247 episodes that have aired since yesterday and soon to be one more tonight at 10:00 pm. The first show that aired in 2012 is Chicago Fire. The show follows the firefighters and paramedics working at Firehouse 51 of the Chicago Fire Department, home of Truck 81, Squad 3, and Ambulance 61, as they risk their lives to save and protect the citizens of their city. The show begins with a dirty cop named Voight who starts harassing one of the lieutenants named Matt Casey. He eventually goes to jail and gets out two years later and that is how Chicago PD came to be. Chicago PD now follows sergeant Voight who got the job in the intelligence unit in the 21st district and his team which had guest starred on a couple episode of Chicago fire. The show aired in 2014 and is currently in it’s fourth season. Voights team consists on Erin Lindsey (Sophia Bush) which is like a daughter to him, Jay Halstead (Jesse Lee Soffer) who dates Erin, Antonio Dawson which is one of the paramedics on Chicago PD’s brother, and a few other detectives. They are like a family and so is the fire house. If anything happens there are always there for each other. The next one is Chicago Med which aired in 2015 which follows the emergency department doctors and nurses of Gaffney Chicago Medical Center as they tackle unique new cases and forge fiery relationships in the pulse-pounding pandemonium of the emergency room. One of the doctors is actually the detective's brother. Lastly Chicago Justice aired this year in 2017 follows the prosecutors and investigators at the Cook County State's Attorney's Office as they navigate their way through Chicago area politics, the legal arena, and media coverage while pursuing justice. It’s a chance for people to see what happens after they're arrested and what happens in the courtroom. Having all these shows and cross over events with them makes it feel like it's an actual world. Chicago Fire is on Tuesday’s at 10, PD is on Wednesday’s at 10, Med is on Thursday’s at 9, and Justice is on Sunday’s at 9 on NBC.
So I just kinda wanted to write about one of my favorite tv shows because thats what I love. "It's been host to authors, NBA players, local legends and fashion designers. Said on the famous river court where the show all started almost nine years later. This is one of the many quotes that stick with me and many One Tree Hill fans. One Tree hill was a television series on from 2003 to 2012. The show is set in the town of Tree Hill in North Carolina and originally follows the lives of two half-brothers, Lucas Scott (Chad Michael Murray) and Nathan Scott (James Lafferty), who compete for positions on their school's basketball team, and the drama that ensues from the brothers' romances. Much of the show is based on the mistakes the teens' parents have made and the way these mistakes manifest themselves in the students' lives. The brothers don’t really know each other and despise each other. Nathan the son of Dan Scott and Deb Scott is the star of the school basketball team and has dreams of going to the NBA. Lucas the son of Dan Scott and Karen Roe only 3 months older than Nathan just plays basketball for fun on the river court, which is a big symbol for the show. Nathan starts showing interest in Lucas best friend Haley (Bethany Joy Lenz). If you don’t know what the definition of Naley is well that sucks for you. If you google Naley the first thing to pop up is the definition. It says 1) The greatest television couple ever. 2) A combination of the names Nathan and Haley, characters from the WB/CW show "One Tree Hill". Coined by supporters of the coupling, but actually used in the show itself e.g. Brooke: "Are you proposing to me? That's so 'Naley'." In my opinion they are probably the strongest couple on television I’ve ever seen and got through so much together. The other two main characters are best friends Brooke Davis (Sophia Bush) and Peyton Sawyer (Hilarie Burton). Lucas has always had a thing for Peyton and said by brooke to another girl if you're not Peyton you can forget about it. Peyton was Nathan's girlfriend by the way. The famous love triangle of Lucas Peyton and Brooke is just insane. When you first meet Brooke you think she's just some mean party girl but she is much more than that. You find out in later seasons that she is the strongest most giving, caring, and smart character you could ever know, also similar to her now character on Chicago PD. Netflix has given this generation a chance to experience this amazing show with so many life lessons. Said by Chad Michael Murray (Lucas) in an interview “girls that are like 15 will come up to me and be like you look so much older in person because they don’t realize how long ago the show really aired. There are no words to really describe the show and how I feel watching it. This show shows friendship, love, loss, tragedy, miracles, sadness, and hope. Till this day the characters have reunions and visit their old pretend houses. Here are just some quotes that are famous from the show. 1. "At this moment there are 6,470,818,671 people in the world. Some are running scared. Some are coming home. Some tell lies to make it through the day. Others are just now facing the truth. Some are evil men, at war with good. And some are good, struggling with evil. Six billion people in the world. Six billion souls. And sometimes — all you need is one." 2. "If you miss them, that means you're lucky. It means you had someone special in your life, someone worth missing." 3. "We fell in love, and at some point, the people we love forgot to love us back." 4. "You know, you might wanna take a long hard look in the mirror. And see if the guy staring back at you is the kind of person you want to be." 5. "Happiness comes in many forms-in the company of good friends, in the feeling you get when you make someone else’s dream come true, or in the promise of hope renewed. It’s okay to let yourself be happy because you never know how fleeting that happiness might be." 6. "If you’re lucky… if you’re the luckiest person on this entire planet, the person you love decides to love you back." 7. Lucas: Peyton! It's you. Peyton: What? Lucas: When all my dreams come true, the one I want next to me. It's you. It's you Peyton. Sami Vedisco
